Welcome!
Voskressenie, meaning rebirth in Russian, is a canticle ensemble formed in the late 1990s. In its current form, Dmitri Oneguin conducts 12 professional singers, all of whom have undergone vocational vocal and choir training.
The group's mission is to raise public awareness of the development of Russian sacred music, and of works that are rarely performed and unfairly overlooked.
A significant part of the ensemble's repertoire is devoted to spiritual concerts. There are works by Italian composers who lived in Russia, e.g. D.Sarti and B.Galuppi, their followers and disciples, and by Russian composers including D. Bortnyanski, M. Berezovsky, S. Degtyarev, S. Davydov and O. Kozlovsky. The so-called German school of Russian spiritual music is represented with concerts by A. Lvov. Two CDs, recorded in 1994 and 1997, entitled "Russian Spiritual Concert" feature works of the above-cited composers of the "Italian" school.
Spiritual compositions of the early 20th century, the renaissance period of Russian church music, also feature heavily in the repertoire. Alongside P. Chesnokov, S. Rachmaninov, A. Arkhangelsky, V. Kalinnikov, are many composers who are less well-known. These composers are rarely seen on posters or heard in concerts, yet their works are, from an artistic point of view, masterpieces. A collection bringing together works of 27 composers was recorded on two CDs "Russian Spiritual Music of the early 20th century" in 1996 and 2000.
The Voskressenie Ensemble's repertoire includes extracts of large cyclic spiritual works such as Masses and Vespers. Composer A. Andreyev-Oscar's work Venchaniye, or Wedding Ceremony, was recorded in its entirety on a CD in 2000.
The technical ability of the singers and the fact that they have been performing together for several years means that the Ensemble can give equally polished performances of compositions written for large choirs or for soloists accompanied by a choir. The CD "Russian Spiritual Music Performed by soloists of the Canticle Ensemble Voskressenie" was recorded in 2004
Since its formation, the group has taken part in several music festivals in Russia and abroad.
Concerts are extremely well received. Audience members, regardless of age or musical background, experience a deep and long-lasting emotional resonance; an effect facilitated by the carefully selected repertoire. Critical acclaim in the press attests to the technical proficiency of the ensemble.
